Subaru (company) Impreza WRX STI 2nd generation GD/GG series
The second generation of Subaru's flagship model, the Impreza.
Subaru's development of the second generation of the Impreza was focused on improving collision safety.
Accordingly, the body design was completely redesigned, the body size was increased and the body rigidity was dramatically improved compared to the previous generation.
At the time of the second-generation Impreza's launch, Subaru was searching for a new design direction, and the second-generation Impreza underwent two major front design changes in line with the change in Subaru's design direction, making it the rare model with three completely different front masks in the model cycle. The model became a rare example of a car with three completely different front masks in a model cycle.
As with its predecessor, a rally-based WRX model equipped with a 4WD system and a turbocharged engine was set up as a base machine for competing in the World Rally Championship (WRC), and boasted high dynamic performance on various surfaces such as dirt, snow and tarmac.
Rally cars based on this model helped Richard Burns and Petter Solberg win the WRC drivers' title in 2001 and 2003 respectively.
