At the 1997 Tokyo Motor Show, Daihatsu exhibited a show model of a mini-car standard that was very well received. It was called the 'Naked'. The Naked was so well received at the 1997 Tokyo Motor Show that Daihatsu decided to release it commercially, almost as a show model, in 1999. The Naked was characterised by a simple, functional interior with exposed steel plates and exterior parts that could be easily removed with screws. This made customisation extremely easy, and the Naked became very popular with custom car enthusiasts. The Naked became a car that is still loved by core users to this day.
