Car
Mazda Savannah RX-7 2nd generation FC3S model
The second generation RX-7 was introduced in 1985, seven years after the launch of the first generation RX-7 in 1978, which became Mazda's most iconic sports car.
Like the first generation RX-7, the most important feature of the RX-7 was that it was powered by Mazda's lightweight, compact and low-vibration rotary engine, which was the only one in the world to be put to practical use by Mazda.
In developing the second generation RX-7, Mazda's engineering team set up a 'Sports Car Study Group', which studied many cars in history.
The aim was to find the ideal sports car that would transcend time and be loved by all.
The conclusion reached was that the car should allow the driver to take independent control of the car and give the driver a 'pleasant sense of tension'.
In pursuit of a true sports car, Mazda's development team was unified and pushed forward with the development of the new RX-7.
Wind tunnel tests had dramatically improved aerodynamic performance, a new twin-scroll turbo engine was adopted, and the rear suspension was changed from the first generation's rigid suspension to a higher-performance independent semi-trailing arm. The RX-7 was the most technologically advanced car of its time.
The second generation RX-7 was finally released in 1985.
At the time, the benchmark for FR-driven sports cars was the Porsche 944, and sports car freaks the world over shared the view that the Porsche 944 was the king of FR sports cars.
However, the newly marketed second-generation RX-7 was far less expensive, but it performed better than the Porsche 944 and astonished sports car freaks the world over.
The second generation RX-7 has thus made a name for itself around the world and is still loved by enthusiasts as a "true sports car" that inspires drivers.
