In 1961, the first Subaru Sambar was a truck and van based on the Subaru 360 platform. The first generation Sambar was a commercial vehicle with a rear engine layout and a unique and costly structure with four-wheel independent suspension. The Sambar boasted good traction performance, which was characteristic of the rear engine layout, and was strong on the rough unpaved roads that were common in Japan at the time of its launch, and combined with the riding comfort provided by the four-wheel independent suspension, it won enthusiastic support in the Japanese market. The Sambar's unique layout for a commercial vehicle was carried over through a series of model changes and, due in part to its high durability, it came to be known as the 'Porsche of farm roads'. This is the sixth-generation Sambar van. It inherits the rear engine layout and four-wheel independent suspension from the first generation, and offers a high level of comfort, excellent load capacity as a commercial vehicle and good handling. Subaru discontinued production of the sixth-generation Sambar in March 2012, and the seventh-generation Sambar, which went on sale in April 2012, is an OEM model supplied by Daihatsu HiZet (10th generation). At the same time, this meant abandoning the unique mechanisms inherited from the first-generation Sambar. Therefore, the sixth-generation Sambar, the last model produced by Subaru, is a rare model that is loved by enthusiasts as a customisation base or as a private car, despite being a commercial vehicle.
