Car
Toyota supra 4th generation (2nd generation in Japan) A80 model
In the 1970s, the Nissan Fairlady Z was an exceptionally big hit in the North American sports car market at the time.
Toyota therefore planned a sports car to compete with the Nissan Fairlady Z in the North American market.
This was the Supra, Toyota's flagship sports car.
The first generation Supra (A40/A50 models), which went on sale in 1978, was based on the second generation Celica and was modified with an in-line six-cylinder engine and an extended wheelbase.
This was in response to Toyota's sales side at the time, which wanted a high-end sports coupe to compete with the Fairlady Z.
On the other hand, there were not a few opinions that the driving performance of the first generation Supra, which was planned as a luxury grand tourer, was insufficient.
Toyota therefore made a bold decision regarding the Supra.
The Supra, which was originally planned as a grand tourer, was to be developed into a full-fledged sports car.
First, when Toyota gave the first generation Supra a facelift in 1980, it made a bold improvement by changing the suspension structure to one with better driving performance.
The second generation Supra (A60), which followed in 1981, introduced a DOHC engine and turbocharger for the first time in a Supra, as well as a body with excellent aerodynamic performance, and the Supra began its journey as a full-fledged sports car.
Toyota continued to make improvements to the Supra.
The third generation (A70) was launched in 1986, followed by the fourth generation (A80) in 1993, and the Supra continued to grow into one of Japan's leading high-performance cars.
The first (A40/50) and second generation Supra (A60) were known as the Celica XX only in Japan, but when the third generation Supra made its debut, they were integrated under the Supra name worldwide.
This vehicle is the fourth-generation Supra (A80), which was unveiled at the 1993 Detroit Motor Show and went on sale in May of the same year.
The fourth-generation Supra, whose catchphrase was "THE SPORTS OF TOYOTA", was a four-seat sports coupe with an in-line six-cylinder engine and an FR layout, in keeping with the tradition of previous Supras.
The fourth-generation Supra had evolved into a high-performance machine that clearly surpassed the third-generation Supra, which was a leading Japanese sports car, in terms of development with the goals of "straight-line stability that allowed the car to be driven without restraint at speeds of 300 km/h and athletic performance that allowed it to be manoeuvred around corners at will".
Toyota's engineering team worked to make the Supra a car that could be driven safely at speeds of up to 300 km/h (62 mph),
The body structure and suspension settings were fundamentally reviewed and aerodynamics were thoroughly pursued to make the Supra a sports car that could be driven stably even at ultra-high speeds.
Furthermore, the Supra's greatest weapon was its engine.
The newly developed 3000 cc in-line six-cylinder engine, named 2JZ-GTE, which was installed in the higher grades of the Supra, only produced the usual figures of 280 hp in Japanese specifications, 320 hp in North American specifications and 330 hp in European specifications, but in daily use without major modifications to the engine itself, it produced over 800 hp. specifications, the engine itself was capable of more than 800 hp,
In drag racing specifications, it was a rare monster engine with a hidden potential of more than 3,000 hp.
As a result, tuners and street racers all over the world were excited by the Supra's hidden potential.
The fourth generation Supra has established itself as a rare monster machine that is still active in street racing and drag racing today.
