Nissan (Datsun) Fairlady Z First generation S30 model
In the 1960s, when Japanese cars were regarded with disdain as cheap and inferior, and their performance was far inferior to that of German and American cars, and their reliability was their only merit, Yutaka Katayama, then in charge of Nissan North America, believed that to succeed in North America it was important not only to sell practical cars, but also to be the image leader in capturing the hearts and minds of the car guys. He believed that a sports car that was an image leader that would capture the hearts and minds of the car guys was crucial to success in North America. Mr Katayama then planned to sell a sports car that would be a rival to the Porsche 911 and Jaguar E-Type, which were recording strong sales in North America at the time. However, it was reckless for Nissan to sell sports cars like the Porsche 911 and Jaguar E-Type, as they were still associated with a cheap image in North America, and it was extremely challenging to design and manufacture a high-performance sports car that was technically close to these cars. For this reason, Nissan management at the time opposed Katayama's plan as reckless. However, Mr Katayama persistently persuaded the management and internal engineers. As a result, in June 1967, a project to develop a new sports car, later named "Fairlady Z", was unofficially launched, and in November 1967 it was approved as an official project by a resolution of the Nissan board. The Fairlady Z project then involved the whole of Nissan. Young designers who had built go-carts for amusement parks, designers specialising in special vehicles such as vacuum cars, and engineers from subsidiary companies who had worked their way up from repairing farm machinery, Many employees voluntarily participated in the FAIRLADY Z project. They had a hidden desire to one day build an ideal sports car with their own hands, and they worked hard on this new sports car project with a desperate will to get it right. And as a result, the FAIRLADY Z was a car that brought together the best of Nissan's technology. A lightweight monocoque body and four-wheel independent suspension with strut-type suspension, The FAIRLADY Z was given the most advanced body structure and suspension of its time. At the same time, in order to achieve a more affordable price than its rivals, efforts were made to reduce costs by using as many general-purpose parts as possible, for example by diverting the in-line six-cylinder engine from the large-displacement Cedric and Gloria sedans. As a by-product of this, the Fairlady Z's power system was designed to be versatile and simple, making it a tough and highly practical sports car that was easy to maintain and difficult to break. The first FAIRLADY Z went on sale in Japan in 1969 and in North America, its main market, in 1970. The reaction of car guys in North America to the low-priced, tough, performance-rivalling Porsche and Jaguar FAIRLADY Z was enthusiastic. The car was such an unprecedented hit that production was not completed in time and back orders were kept for a year. For a Japanese car with a low brand image at the time, the fact that it was accepted by North American car guys in the sports car market was an extremely groundbreaking event. The first generation FAIRLADY Z was a monument to the acceptance of Japanese cars by the rest of the world in the true sense of the word, and it is a car that will remain a landmark in automotive history. Even today, there are many enthusiastic Z-car fans in North America, and the first generation FAIRLADY Z is still cherished by North American car guys.
