Toyota Sprinter Treno 4th generation AE86 model
In May 1983, Toyota's flagship model, the Corolla, was remodelled into the fifth generation (E80 series), abandoning the FR layout it had previously adopted and becoming the first Corolla model in its history to adopt front-wheel drive (FF). On the other hand, the Corolla Levin/Sprinter Treno, the sporty version of the Corolla, took a different path. Based on the platform and suspension of the previous generation Corolla Levin/Sprinter Treno (TE71), which had adopted an RWD layout, improvements were made and the fourth generation Corolla Levin/Sprinter Treno, which was different from the Corolla, was born in May 1983. This was because Toyota at the time did not know whether it would be possible to achieve the driving performance appropriate for a sports car with an FF layout, and it was judged that an RWD layout with a proven track record would be suitable for the Levin/Treno. Thus, the fourth generation Levin-Treno, named AE86, adopted a conservative and simple mechanism that was a carry-over from the previous generation. However, Toyota did not see the fourth generation Levin-Treno as merely an improved version of its predecessor. The newly developed 4A-GEU engine with DOHC 16 valves was introduced, and the body was made both more rigid and significantly lighter to ensure that its fighting power was improved. Furthermore, two types of body were available: a three-door hatchback and a two-door notchback, and several versions were available in terms of appearance and body shape, such as the front mask with square headlights for the Levin and retractable headlights for the Treno. The AE86, which was sold at a price affordable even for young people, became an unprecedented hit for a sports car. The AE86's simple mechanism, direct handling, pleasing engine response and highly controllable handling characteristics won the hearts of many motorists of the time. As a result, many tuning menus were developed for the AE86, and it was very active in motorsport events such as gymkhana, rally and racing. The AE86 also had straightforward handling characteristics that taught drivers how good or bad their driving was, so it served as a training machine for Japanese racing drivers and rally drivers. Even today, in the 21st century, the AE86's popularity is undiminished, and it continues to be driven on mountain passes and circuits as a rare sports car that transcends time and generation.
