The Spyder and GTV were two sister cars unveiled at the Alfa Romeo booth at the 1994 Paris Motor Show. Although they share a similar exterior designed by Pininfarina, the GTV is a 2+2 coupe with a seating capacity of four, while the Spyder, an open model, has a seating capacity of two. The GTV, which was based on the Spyder and reinforced with a metal roof, boasted higher driving performance and dynamics than the Spyder, and this was a big hit with the eager Alfista who had been waiting for a successor to the previous generation GTV, which was discontinued in 1987.
