Car
TOYOTA SUPRA 4th generation (2nd generation in Japan) A80 type
In the 1970s, the Nissan Fairlady Z was an exceptionally big hit in the North American sports car market. Toyota therefore planned a sports car to compete with the Nissan Fairlady Z in the North American market. This was the Supra, Toyota's flagship sports car. The first generation Supra (A40/A50), which went on sale in 1978, was based on the second generation Celica and was modified with a new inline 6-cylinder engine and an extended wheelbase. This was in response to a request from Toyota's sales force at the time, which wanted a high-end sports coupe to compete with the Fairlady Z. The Supra was a high-end grand tourer and a high-end sports coupe. On the other hand, there were not a few opinions that the driving performance of the first generation Supra, which was planned as a luxury grand tourer, was insufficient. Therefore, Toyota made a bold decision for the Supra. Toyota decided to train the Supra, which was originally planned as a grand tourer, as a full-fledged sports car. First, when Toyota gave the first-generation Supra a facelift in 1980, it made a bold improvement by changing the suspension structure to one with better driving performance. The second generation Supra (A60 model), which followed in 1981, introduced the first DOHC engine and turbocharger for the first time in a Supra, as well as a body with superior aerodynamic performance, and the Supra began its journey as a full-fledged sports car. Toyota continued to make improvements to the Supra. The third generation (A70) was launched in 1986, followed by the fourth generation (A80) in 1993, and the Supra continued to grow into a high-performance car representing the Japanese automobile industry. The first generation (A40/50) and the second generation Supra (A60) were called the Celica XX only in Japan, However, when the third generation Supra debuted, they were integrated under the name of "Supra" worldwide. This car is the fourth-generation Supra (A80 model). It was unveiled at the 1993 Detroit Motor Show, and went on sale in May of the same year. The catchphrase of the 4th generation Supra was "THE SPORTS OF TOYOTA, it was a four-seater sports coupe equipped with an inline 6-cylinder engine and an FR layout, in keeping with the tradition of previous Supras. Besides, the development of the fourth-generation Supra was focused on "straight-line stability that allows the car to be driven at 300 km/h without letting go, and athletic performance that allows the driver to maneuver the car around corners as he or she pleases. The fourth-generation Supra had evolved into a high-performance machine that clearly surpassed even the third-generation Supra, which had been one of Japan's most iconic sports cars. Toyota's engineering team worked to make the Supra a car that could safely run at speeds of up to 300 km/h. The body structure and suspension settings were fundamentally reviewed, and aerodynamics were thoroughly pursued, the result is a sports car that is stable even at extremely high speeds. Furthermore, the Supra's greatest weapon was its engine. The newly developed 3000cc inline 6-cylinder engine, named 2JZ-GTE, was installed in the higher grades of the Supra, mounted in the higher grades of the Supra, produced a common sense exercise of power : 280 horsepower for the Japanese version, 320 horsepower for the North American version, and 330 horsepower for the European version. However, it was a rare monster engine that had the hidden potential to produce more than 800 horsepower in daily use specifications without major engine modifications, and more than 3,000 horsepower in drag racing specifications. As a result, tuners and street racers around the world were excited by the Supra's hidden potential. The 4th generation Supra has established itself as a rare monster machine that is still active in street racing and drag racing.
