Porsche 911 Turbo 2nd generation type930
In September 1963, the Porsche 911 (first generation Type 901), the eternal icon of the sports car, was unveiled to the public at the Frankfurt Motor Show as the successor to the Porsche 356, Porsche's first production car. Developed by a team led by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, grandson of Porsche's founder Ferdinand Porsche, the Porsche 911 (first generation 901) was designed from scratch, unlike the 356, which used basic components from the VW Beetle. It was a practical sports car with an extremely unique mechanism in which the air-cooled horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine was mounted on the rear of the car. The air-cooled, horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine, with a crankcase made entirely of aluminum alloy, a dry sump, and other progressive design features, delivered 130 PS at 6,100 rpm from a displacement of 2 liters, an extremely high horsepower for a production car at the time. The 911, which went into production in 1964, captivated sports car freaks around the world with its fascinating driving feel and excellent dynamic performance brought about by precision machinery, strong traction unique to the RR layout, and high reliability. However, this was only the beginning of a legend. The Porsche 911 continued to be improved while maintaining the basic design of the unique engine and body that debuted in 1964, and for 33 years until 1997, when the baton was passed to the fifth-generation 911 (996 model), a completely new design equipped with a liquid-cooled horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine, the 911 was a first-class sports car that won numerous races, including the Le Mans 24-hour endurance race. During that time, the 911's air-cooled, horizontally opposed engine, which had been updated over the past 33 years to compete with powerful rivals such as Ferrari and Lamborghini, was expanded to a maximum of 3.8 liters, with the most powerful 3.6-liter turbo producing 450 PS at 6,000 rpm. This meant that the Porsche engineers of the time who introduced the 911 in 1964 had accomplished a great and timeless task. The Porsche 911 was a rare car that boasted first-class performance over a long period of time while inheriting the same design, and its name will forever be etched in the annals of automotive history. This car is the 930 model, the second generation of the 911, which was announced in August 1973. In order to meet the collision safety standards of the time in the U.S., the shape of the front and rear bumpers was drastically changed, and the overall length was extended by 144mm compared to the 901 model. In order to comply with emission regulations, Bosch's K-Jetronic fuel injection system was adopted, and emission performance and fuel economy were greatly improved. Porsche introduced further innovations to the 911. The 911 Turbo, the first production Porsche with a turbocharger, was unveiled at the 1974 Paris Salon. Porsche had been racing the turbocharged 917 in the racing field since 1972, and in the Can-Am series, which was popular at the time, the 917 was winning in large numbers due to its overwhelming power and competitiveness. Therefore, although the world's first production turbo engine model was given up to the Oldsmobile F-85 Jetfire sold in 1962, the appearance of Porsche's first production turbo model, the 911 Turbo, at the Paris Salon greatly excited automobile fans around the world at the time. The 911 Turbo, which went on sale in 1975, won the admiration of motor journalists and sports car freaks around the world as the ultimate sports car that combined outstanding performance and comfort.
