In the 1960s, British-made lightweight open sports cars such as the Lotus Elan, MG MGB, and Austin Healey were extremely popular in Europe and the United States. However, Mazda did not compromise on the chassis to achieve "Jinba Ittai" (rider and horse as one), as it was the first Mazda to be equipped with high-cost double wishbones in the front and rear. When sales began in 1989, the Roadster (MX-5) became extremely popular all over the world due to its affordable price and excellent handling. Thus the first MX-5, the NA model, achieved worldwide sales of more than 430,000 units by the end of production in 1997, an astonishing feat for a two-seater open car. This was an astounding sales record for a two-seater convertible. As a result, a wide variety of followers were sold by many manufacturers around the world from the 1990s onward. Later, due to profitability and market needs, many manufacturers other than Mazda stopped selling two-seater open sports cars, or increased the price and body size of their two-seater open cars. On the other hand, Mazda continued to produce the Roadster (MX-5) and maintained its development policy of "Jinba Ittai," and kept the lightweight, affordable, lightweight open sports car. The Roadster (MX-5), which continued to be a lightweight open sports car through model changes, became a car loved by many enthusiasts around the world. As a result, in April 2016, when the fourth generation ND model was manufactured, the MX-5 reached a total of 1 million units in all generations, setting an unprecedented milestone for a convertible car.
