Car
MAZDA MX-5 2nd generation NB type
In the 1960s, British-made lightweight open sports cars such as the Lotus Elan, MG MGB, and Austin Healey were extremely popular in Europe and the United States.
However, in the 1970s, emission regulations and revised crash safety regulations began to force these cars out of the market, and by the 1980s, lightweight open sports cars themselves had almost disappeared from the market.
In the 1980s, a new sports car was planned by Mazda North America.
In the 1980s, a member of the development department at Mazda's North American technical center said, "If only there was a lightweight car like the MG," which sparked the development of a lightweight open-top sports car by a group of volunteers led by Mazda staff in North America.
In 1986, the project was approved by Mazda's planning committee, The development project was officially launched.
However, at the start of the project, the Roadster (MX-5) development staff was small and there was much opposition to the project within Mazda, so it was not smooth sailing.
Despite these circumstances, Mazda's engineers poured their utmost passion into the development of the MX-5.
The development concept was "Jinba Ittai" ("rider and horse as one"), and Mazda's engineers put all the elements they could think of to bring driving pleasure into the car, including a 50:50 front-rear weight distribution, a compact body size with an FR drive layout, a vehicle weight of less than one ton, a low center of gravity, and a body with a low moment of inertia.
On the other hand, in order to earn sales volume, Mazda had to achieve a low price.
Therefore, the existing engine and gearbox were used to reduce costs and achieve an affordable selling price.
However, Mazda did not compromise on the chassis to achieve "Jinba Ittai" (rider and horse as one), as it was the first Mazda to be equipped with high-cost double wishbone suspension front and rear.
When sales of the MX-5 began in 1989, its affordable price and excellent handling made it the most popular car in the world.
The first generation Roadster (MX-5), the NA model, achieved sales of more than 430,000 units worldwide by the end of production in 1997, an astounding sales record for a two-seater convertible.
As a result, a wide variety of followers were sold by many manufacturers around the world from the 1990s onward.
Later, due to profitability and market needs, many manufacturers other than Mazda stopped selling two-seater open sports cars, or increased the price and body size of their two-seater open cars.
On the other hand, Mazda continued to produce the Roadster (MX-5) and maintained its development policy of "Jinba Ittai," or "rider and horse as one," and kept the lightweight, affordable, lightweight open sports car.
The Roadster (MX-5), which continued to be a lightweight open sports car through model changes, became a car loved by many enthusiasts around the world.
As a result, in April 2016, when the fourth-generation ND model was manufactured, the MX-5 reached a total of 1 million units in all generations, setting an unprecedented milestone for a convertible car.
This vehicle is the NB model, the second generation of the MX-5 roadster.
While inheriting the engine, chassis, etc. from the first-generation NA model, the NB model features improved collision safety, a more rigid body, and overall improvements to the engine, etc.
The simple mechanism makes it extremely easy to maintain and durable, and coupled with its handling characteristics that respond to driver operation, it has become a typical car for sportsman drivers in Japan to hone their skills on circuits and in gymkhanas.
