MITSUBISHI MOTORS LANCER Evolution Ⅸ 3rd generation CT9A
The Lancer Evolution is a high-performance car based on the company's Lancer, modified for rally competition and marketed by Mitsubishi as a base vehicle for participation in the World Rally Championship (WRC). It is classified into 1st generation (based on the 4th generation Lancer), 2nd generation (based on the 5th generation Lancer), 3rd generation (based on the 6th generation Lancer (Japanese name: Lancer Cedia)), and 4th generation (based on the 7th generation Lancer (Japanese name: Galant Fortis)), according to the type of vehicle used as the base body. This vehicle is the Evo IX, the third-generation Lancer Evolution. A notable feature of the Lancer Evolution is that its body structure is very similar to that of vehicles competing in the WRC. Since the first generation, the development of the Lancer Evolution was promoted in order to demonstrate competitiveness under the Group A regulations (which strictly limit modifications to the exterior, engine, suspension structure, etc., from production vehicles), which were applicable to WRC-entered vehicles. In the WRC, where the Group A regulations limited the scope of modifications from production cars, the performance of the base car itself was directly related to the performance of the race car. Therefore, Mitsubishi made various improvements to the Lancer Evolution for rally cars based on the data obtained through its participation in the WRC. These efforts bore fruit, with Mitsubishi winning four consecutive WRC drivers' titles from 1996 to 1999 under the leadership of Tomi Makinen, The Lancer Evolution established itself as the most powerful rally car ever built. Mitsubishi later decided to enter the WRC under the WRC car regulations, which allowed for a wider range of modifications, rather than the Group A regulations, which were based on production cars. Therefore, the technical relationship between the 3rd and later generations of the Lancer Evolution and WRC cars was severed. However, Mitsubishi continued to improve the Lancer Evolution, In the 3rd generation, the Lancer Evolution was used in rally, gymkhana, circuit, drag racing, and other competitions. It became an extremely versatile all-rounder that could be used in all kinds of competitions, including rally, gymkhana, circuit, and drag racing.
